Film / Theater / TV
WSMB's corporate, intellectual property, and litigation practices include the representation of a diverse array of companies and individuals conducting business in many roles in the film, live theater and television industries.
Our clients in the film industry work primarily as producers, directors and financiers of both documentary and independent feature films. We also represent rights-holders who grant rights in underlying properties (e.g., books and plays) for the production of Hollywood feature films. Our senior partner, Alan Bomser, has for over 50 years been one of New York City's preeminent legal advisers to documentary filmmakers, including the legendary Maysles brothers. In recent years, WSMB has counseled such notable documentary producer/directors as Robert Duval and Cynthia Wade (winner of the 2008 Academy Award for the Best Short Documentary, awarded for her film "Freeheld").
In the live theater industry, WSMB has advised producers and financiers of plays (both on and off Broadway) as well as individuals rendering services in a wide array of capacities, ranging from on-stage talent, to the authors of a play's book or music and lyrics, to musical directors. We also represent one of America's only consistently profitable, nationwide producers of small-scale plays and musicals.
WSMB's clients in the television industry are typically the creators of concepts for new dramatic or reality television series. We have also represented one of the largest cable television companies in connection with drafting and negotiating cable affiliation deals with various cable channels. We have also worked extensively on the music side of film, theater, and television -- negotiating and drafting agreements for synchronization licenses, soundtrack albums, and related deals.
